English Labradors are a purebred dog that has been around since the late 1800s while Labradoodles are a hybrid cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle.

History of Labradors and Labradoodles

Labradors and Labradoodles are both popular breeds of dogs that have long been a part of human culture. The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the world and has been for centuries, dating back to at least the 1830s, when they were bred by European settlers in Newfoundland.. The Labradoodle is a relatively new breed, developed as a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. This mix has been known in the United States since the 1950s and was used in the entertainment industry in the U.S. as early as the 1960s

Physical Appearance

English Labradors are typically thicker and stockier dogs than Labradoodles. The typical weight is between 55-80 pounds, while the Labradoodles typically weigh between 50-65 pounds. The English Labrador has a broad muzzle, wide head, and thick smooth coat. The 1st generation Labradoodle is often straight-coated, it will give them a wiry look with a slightly coarser feeling coat.Their coats vary in color, from almost white, varying shades of yellow, chocolate, and black.

Temperament

Labradors and Labradoodles have distinct temperaments that set them apart from one another. Labradors are known for their calm, loving personalities, and are often described as being loyal, intelligent, and friendly. Labradoodles, on the other hand, tend to be more energetic and boisterous. They can be very outgoing and social, but can also have a tendency to be somewhat more vocal than Labradors.

Health and Maintenance

English Labradors and Labradoodles require different levels of health and maintenance.

English Labradors are a relatively healthy breed, but they can suffer from typical large breed ailments such as hip and elbow dysplasia. They need regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and active. They are a breed that can easily become overweight, so maintaining an appropriate diet is vital. Grooming includes brushing the coat weekly, trimming the nails, cleaning the ears, and ensuring good dental hygiene. Labradoodles are typically at a lesser risk for the same health concerns due to their hybrid nature, however it is still recommended to acquire your future family member from a reputable breeder that can provide the necessary health clearances.

While both English Labradors and Labradoodles are wonderful family companions, it is important to survey your living arrangements and lifestyle to decide which one would be a better fit for you!
