The English Labradoodle
The English Labradoodle is a cross between an English Labrador Retriever and a Standard or Mini Poodle.
Our favorite dog breeds are those who can truly be considered ‘companions’ and great family pets. And for this reason, the English Labradoodle was a natural choice.
If you’re looking for a breed that is highly intelligent, loyal, and loves interaction, there isn’t likely a better choice than the English Labradoodle. A combination of two beloved purebred breeds, the English Labradoodle is beautiful and loving. When well-trained, this kind of dog can be a great fit for families, offering energy and playfulness to owners of all ages. Plus, because these Labradoodles have coats with hypoallergenic properties, they’re a pleasure to keep in the home.
Below we will provide more information about the Labradoodle and why we believe you will fall in love with them. If you have further questions about the Labradoodle, please email us at info@rdoodles.com.
It became a common breed around 1989.
What many people don’t know is that the name “Labradoodle” was actually given more than 30 years before. But in 1989, an Australian breeder sought to create a new breed of guide dog, and the Labrador quickly grew in popularity.
Many similar breeds were attempted because of the success found in early Labradoodle breeds, but most of those breeds were found to be less successful. It turned out that the English Labradoodle, when carefully bred with the right parents, was hard to match!
Originally bred to be a hypoallergenic guide dog, it was soon realized that this hybrid breed had all the traits of a great family pet. And that is also what led us to breed them.
The English Labradoodle will love you, play with you, and find friends everywhere!
It’s often said that an English Labradoodle will not make a great guard dog, and this is true. They are much more likely to become friends with strangers than to be aggressive.
It is this super friendly demeanor that also makes the English Labradoodle great for families with children and owners who have frequent visitors. It has the temperament of the Labrador who loves people, and wants to please them. The Labradoodle is also quite friendly and forgiving around other pets.
The English Labradoodle typically carries the intelligence of the Poodle, while having the level-headed persistence of the Labrador. This leads to a very trainable breed in most cases, especially when you start early. They love to learn and please you with their new skills!
The English Labradoodle tends to be above average in terms of their energy level, and loves to play. To this dog, life is about fun and friendships!
As a hybrid, carefully bred Labradoodles can take on the best traits of both parents.
As with any hybrid breed, the English Labradoodle has the potential to see health issues that are common to both the Labrador and the Poodle. These issues can include things like hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and in some cases, Addison’s disease.
There is no way to guarantee that an English Labradoodle will never experience illness, but with proper breeding of high quality parents, and doing all appropriate tests on both parents and puppies, we can minimize these issues.
Most of our puppies take on the best traits of the parents, and our program ensures some of the healthiest English Labradoodles you will find.

Care and Maintenance Of The Labradoodle
The Labradoodle is a typically light shedder with a need for regular activity.
The Labradoodle is known to have a variety of different hair types. You will find anything from a soft wave to a thicker curl. Due to having the Poodle as a parent breed, Labradoodles tend to shed less than most breeds, and in some cases, you may not even notice any shedding. This makes the Labradoodle ideal for those with allergies, though it is very important to spend time with any potential new puppy before buying if your allergies are strong.
The Labradoodle will require regular brushing, typically around 3 times per week. This keeps their beautiful coat healthy and shiny, and they also happen to enjoy the interaction time!.
We also recommend a high quality diet, as you will find in our recommended brand, TLC.
Daily exercise is also essential. While this routine does not have to be strenuous (and we recommend NOT over-exercising your pup), it does need to be regular. This will help to maintain not only proper health, but optimal personality and confidence in your pup. So be sure to have interactive activity every day, even if just for a few minutes at a time.
